Papers, 1818-1907 (bulk 1818-1857).

Collection contains papers of members of the Garland family of Amherst County, Va. Included are letters, 1818-1821, to Sarah Armstead (Garland) Waller from her mother, Jane Henry (Meredith) Garland and letters, 1839-1855, from Samuel Garland, Jr., to his mother, Caroline Matilda (Garland) Garland, and other family members. There is also a commonplace book, 1837-1842, of writing exercises completed by Samuel, as well as correspondence to family members in Virginia from those who emigrated to Tuscaloosa, Ala., and Michigan. Subjects addressed include the education and adolescence of boys and girls in antebellum Virginia, family relationships, and migration.
